Last week I had a day when nothing urgent had to be done and it felt like the perfect day for something I wanted to try for such a long time. In my creative work I use a lot of tradional techniques. Pigment ink drawing, acrylic backgrounds, bits of watercoloured pieces, handmade textures. But the major part is always done on my computer.
Insipired by the wonderful sketchbook project by Jennifer Orkin Lewis (aka August Wren) and encouraged by the lovely Jennifer herself I wanted to try a 100% handmade painting. For a tradional artist it might sound funny that it took me such a long time to overcome my natural respect for traditional media, but the most artists using computer to finish their work will understand the fear when there is no command+Z or a copy of version b.
As I love to draw birds and berries choosing the subject for my very first 100% aquarell painting was the easiest part. I felt drawn to a picture of a fieldfare holding a berry in its beak.
I enjoyed working just for fun, with no expectations for the result. All in all a pretty relaxing little project and I have already some other birds in mind.

Letzte Woche ergab sich ein Tag, an dem nichts Dringendes anstand und es schien der perfekte Tag für etwas, was ich mir seit Langem vorgenommen habe. Bei meiner Arbeit verwende ich viele traditionelle Elemente. Meine Handzeichnungen, Acrylhintergründe, mit Wasserfarben gemalte Elemente, handgemachte Texturen. Aber der Großteil entsteht doch immer am Computer.
Das wunderschöne Skizzenbuch-Projekt von Jennifer Orkin Lewis (aka August Wren) empfand ich schon lange als sehr inspirierend. Von Jennifer selbst wurde ich immer wieder freundlich ermutigt, mich an ein 100% traditionell gemaltes Bild zu trauen. Für Künstler, die immer traditionell arbeiten, mag es lustig klingen, aber die meisten Illustratoren, die ihre Arbeiten am Computer vollenden, werden meine Furcht verstehen. Kein Command+Z oder eine Kopie der Version b.
Da ich sehr gerne Vögel und Beeren zeichne, war die Wahl meines ersten Aquarellbildes der einfachste Teil. Mir gefiel das Photo einer Wacholderdrossel, die eine Beere im Schnabel hält.
Es war schön, an etwas nur zum Spaß zu arbeiten, ohne Erwartungen an das Ergebnis. Alles in allem ein kleines entspannendes Projekt. Den nächsten Vogel habe ich schon im Kopf.
