Thanks so much to everybody for all the lovely comments about my rhubarb-strawberry-cake recipe I illustrated for the wonderful “They draw and cook” blog run by Salli and Nate. I was delighted to see how many people liked it and shared it on Facebook.
Of course I didn´t want to miss a submission for the other blog by Salli and Nate, “They draw and travel”. By fortunate coincidence there is a TDAT contest in colaboration with the UPPERCASE magazine right now. The briefing asks for an illustrated map of “the creative and curious places and sights in the vicinity of where you live or grew up”. I chose to submit a map of the old town center of Prague, a place I spent the first six years of my life and I still love so much.

Last autumn I already drew a map of my birthplace Prague for Lilla Roger´s MATS editorial assignment. You can read more about the places I love and recommend to visit in Prague here. A great thing about reworking my map to the larger format demanded by TDAT was the spare space that allowed to add even more of my favorite locations, such as the castle Vysehrad. I visit it far too seldom, for it is a fantastic area to recover from the business in the center of Prague. You just have to take two Metro (= Prague underground) stations from “Muzeum” with the C line and follow the “Vysehrad” signs. You will be rewarded by a spectacular view over Prague, yet completly different from the one you have looking from Hradcany castle. Vysehrad has a very old history dating back to the middle of the 10th century. An old legend I loved to hear as a child says that princess Libuse, who was married to Premysl Orac, predicted a glorious future to a city. She described the place where a castle should be built, to be called Praha. An other legend says that Horymír, an hystorical character from the Slavic mytology, was punished to death. His trusty horse Semík recovered him by jumping with him from the Vysehrad rock into the river. The prince, impressed by the courage and faithfullness of Semík, who died after the jump, granted mercy to Horymír. Not only the view and the castle is worth a visit. I love to visit old cemeteries and the one in Vysehrad is very special. It was built in 1869 and is the last home for some of the most famoust czech personalities, such as Antonín Dvorak (composer), Karel Hynek Mácha (poet), Alfons Mucha (artist), Bedrich Smetana (composer of the “Vltava” from the “My homeland”cycle; you find him in my map), Waldemar Matuska (pop star), just to name a few.
After this little excursion into the czech history, you should be recompensed by some food. During lunch time, you can choose between a beautiful art noveau restaurant, the “Caffee Savoy”, where you can enjoy your meal in a classy atmosphere and maybe meet some celebrities and “Malostranská Beseda”, where the prices are more reasonable and the food is more authentic. When it´s tea time and you are on the right side of the river, you shouldn´t miss the “Kavárna Obecni Dum”, which is said to be the most beautiful art noveau coffee in Prague. The building was projected by the architects Antonín Bolsánek and Osvald Polívka and is also the place where the founding of the Czech Republik was proclaimed.
And the headless man next to the national theater? Its the ghost of the mayor Jirík Svenkhamr, who was beheaded because of being careless with the golden chop with the city arms. You might meet him next to St. Martin’s church, but he only appears to chaotic, disorganized people.
You are travelling with children and they are tired of visiting the twentieth church, the fifth muzeum and the hundreth souvenir shop? Take a day off and visit the Prague ZOO, preferrably taking a boat from the city to the ZOO in the summer months. The Prague ZOO was included in the top ZOOs in the world by the Forbes Traveler. You will get to see a brand new elephant area, an african area with giraffes, which lets you feel like being in Africa and not to forget macho gorilla male Richard. He is very propagable and so dominant, he has to be feed with a spoon by a caregiver to give time to his wifes and children to grab some food, while he is distracted. If you are as fortunate as we were, your children will get the chance to see one of the gorillas eating their excrements (they get enough food, we were told it´s natural they do so) and will have an exciting topic to discuss during boring dinner times for years. Ugh!

Ein großes Dankeschön an alle, die mir liebe Kommentare zu meinem Rhabarber-Erdbeer-Kuchen Rezept geschickt haben, welches ich für den “They draw and cook” Blog von Salli and Nate illustriert habe. Ich war sehr überrascht und glücklich zu sehen, wieviele Leute es gemocht und auf Facebook geteilt haben.
Gerne wollte ich eine Karte für Sallis und Nates anderen Blog, “They draw and travel” zeichnen. Ein glücklicher Zufall, daß “TDAT” gerade einen Wettbewerb in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Uppercase Magazin ausgeschrieben hat. Man soll eine Karte des Ortes zeichnen, “the creative and curious places and sights in the vicinity of where you live or grew up”. Naheliegend, daß ich mich für das alte Zentrum von Prag entschieden habe, dort, wo ich die ersten sechs Jahre meines Lebens verbracht habe und wo es mich immer wieder hinzieht.
Mein Blogformat ist zu schmal, um die einzelnen Details der Karte zu zeigen. Wer es gerne 1:1 sehen und all die anderen schönen Karten von Künstlern aus aller Welt bewundern möchte, findet es hier.

Im vergangenen Herbst habe ich für Lilla Roger´s MATS Kurs bereits eine Karte von Prag gezeichnet und hier geschrieben, welche Plätze sich zu besuchen lohnt. Als ich meine Karte für das von TDAT vorgeschriebene Format umgestaltet habe, freute es mich, noch mehr Raum für meine Lieblingsplätze in Prag zu haben, z.B. für die Burganlage Vysehrad. Ich besuche sie leider viel zu selten, obwohl es ein wunderbarer Ort ist, um sich von der Geschäftigkeit des Zentrums zu erholen. Man muß nur zwei Stationen mit der C Linie der Metro von “Muzeum” fahren und dann den “Vysehrad” Wegweisern folgen, schon ist man dort. Belohnt wird man mit einem spektakulären Blick über Prag, der ganz andere Teile zeigt, als wenn man von der Burg Hradcany die Aussicht genießt. Vysehrad hat eine sehr alte Geschichte vorzuweisen, die in die Mitte des zehnten Jahrhunderts zurückreicht. Eine alte Legende, die ich als Kind gemocht habe, besagt, daß die Fürstin Libuse, verheiratet mit Premysl Orác, eine glorreiche Zukunft für eine Stadt prophezeite. Sie beschrieb den Ort, an dem eine Burg gebaut werden sollte, genannt Praha. Eine andere Geschichte erzählt von Horymir, einer mythologischen Gestalt aus der slawischen Geschichte. Er wurde zu Tode verurteilt, aber sein treues Pferd Semík rettete ihn mit einem gewagten Sprung von dem Felsen in den Fluss, der unter Vysehrad fließt. Das Pferd starb danach, aber der Fürst war von der Treue des Pferdes so gerührt, daß er Horymír das Leben schenkte. Und nicht nur die Burganlage und der Ausblick sind einen Besuch wert. Ich liebe es, alte Friedhöfe zu besuchen und der Friedhof auf Vysehrad ist etwas Besonders. Er wurde 1869 gebaut und einige der berühmtesten Tschechen liegen dort begraben. Antonín Dvorak (Komponist), Karel Hynek Mácha (Dichter), Alfons Mucha (Maler), Bedrich Smetana (Komponist der “Moldau” aus dem “Mein Vaterland” Zyklus; ihr findet ihn auf meiner Karte), Waldemar Matuska (Popstar), nur um ein paar zu nennen.
Nach diesem kleinen Exkurs in die Prager Geschichte sollt ihr mit gutem Essen belohnt werden. Ist es Zeit fürs Mittag- oder Abendessen, empfiehlt sich das wunderschöne Jugendstilrestaurant “Caffee Savoy”, wo man sein Essen in einer stilvollen Atmosphäre geniessen kann und mit etwas Glück eine berühmte Persönlichkeit trifft oder “Malostranská Beseda”, das freundlichere Preise und authentischeres Essen bietet. Falls es Zeit für einen Tee oder Kaffee ist und Ihr Euch rechts der Moldau befindet, ist das Kaffee im Obecní Dum einen Besuch Wert. Es soll das schönste Jugendstilkaffee der Stadt sein und wurde von den Architekten Antonín Bolsánek und Osvald Polívka entworfen. Hier wurde auch die Gründung der tschechischen Republik verkündet.
Und der kopflose Herr rechts des Nationaltheaters? Das ist der Geist des Bürgermeisters Jirík Svenkhamr, der wegen seines nachlässigen Umgangs mit dem Siegelstock mit dem Stadtwappen geköpft wurde. Ihr könnt ihn mit etwas Glück in der Nähe der St. Martin Kirche antreffen. Aber Vorsicht. Er erscheint nur unordentlichen, chaotischen Personen.
Vielleicht reist Ihr mit Kindern, die es leid sind, die zwanzigste Kirche, das fünfte Museum, den Hundersten Souvenierladen zu besuchen? Dann nehmt Euch doch einen Tag Auszeit, um den Prager Tierpark zu besuchen. Am Besten man nimmt in den Sommermonaten das Schiff, das im Zentrum ablegt. Der Prager Tierpark wurde vom Forbes Traveler zu einem der schönsten ZOOs der Welt gewählt und das nicht umsonst. Es gibt einen neuen Elephantenbereich, ein grosses Afrikagelände, wo man vergißt, mitten in Europa zu sein und das fabelhafte Gorillamännchen Richard. Richard ist extrem fortpflanzungsfreudig und so dominant, daß er von den Pflegern mit einem Löffel gefüttert wird, damit in der Zeit, wo er abgelenkt ist, seine Frauen und Kinder etwas essen können. Mit etwas Glück können Euere Kinder wie wir Richard dabei beobachten, wie er seine Exkremente verspeist (die Gorillas bekommen genügend Essen, es ist ganz natürlich für sie), was anregenden Gesprächsstoff für viele langweilige Abendessen gibt. Über Jahre hinweg. Lecker!
